I remember once googling for an image of this coin and finding a great conspiracy website about how Offa had converted to Islam and how the Church of England had destroyed all the sources – creating the ‘Dark Ages’ – so we’d never find out. I think we can file that under ‘doubtful’. (Charlemagne might have noticed, for one).
